Ireland Student Visa from Nepal: Requirements and Process

Nepalese students need a long-stay “D” study visa to study in Ireland. You apply online through AVATS after receiving an offer from a course on the Interim List of Eligible Programmes (ILEP), then submit your documents for processing, which for Nepal is handled through the Embassy of Ireland in New Delhi. Key requirements are fees paid, at least €10,000 a year for living costs, medical insurance and a clear study plan. On arrival you register for Stamp 2.

Fees and funds rules

Irish immigration guidance currently says that if your course fee is under €6,000 you should pay it in full before applying, and if it is over €6,000 you should pay at least €6,000. Paying more of the fee up front can strengthen your application. Payments should go directly to the institution’s account and the receipt should be included.

For living costs you must show immediate access to at least €10,000 for each year of study. Funds should be held in an account you or your sponsor can use, with a clear history; sudden unexplained deposits are a common reason for refusal. Nepali sponsors usually provide a bank balance certificate and statements, an education loan letter if relevant, CA property valuation, income source and tax documents, and relationship verification from the ward office.

Step-by-step process from Nepal

Apply for the visa only after you have accepted an offer and paid fees. Complete the AVATS online form, pay the visa fee, then submit your passport and documents as instructed for applications from Nepal, which are processed through the Embassy of Ireland in New Delhi. Visa fees and processing times are set by the Irish authorities and change, so check the current figures on the Irish immigration website. Apply as early as allowed so you have time to respond to any request for more information.

If your visa is refused you can usually appeal in writing within the stated deadline, addressing every reason listed in the refusal letter. Because appeals take time, it is better to get the original application right.

Stamp 2 and registration after arrival

At the Irish border an immigration officer checks your documents and grants permission to enter. You then register with Irish immigration and receive an Irish Residence Permit (IRP) card showing Stamp 2, which lets you study full time and work up to 20 hours a week in term and 40 hours a week in official holidays. Carry original copies of your offer, fee receipt, insurance and finance documents in your hand luggage for the border check and registration.

Common reasons for Irish visa refusals

  • Funds that are insufficient, recently deposited or not clearly sourced.
  • Unexplained gaps in education or employment.
  • A course that does not fit your academic background or career plan.
  • Missing documents, unsigned forms or inconsistent information.
  • Weak letter of application that does not explain why Ireland and why this course.
